Introduction To Piers Carpenter’s Road Tests

Piers Carpenter is an up-and-coming star of the UK jewellery industry. You may have seen him on All That Glitters, the BBC’s jewellery-making talent show. In 2022, he was crowned winner of Series Two.

Find out what happened when we invited Piers to road test some of Maun’s most popular jewellery parallel pliers.

About Maun Jewellery Tools

Maun has long been a respected brand within the jewellery sector and community, so much so that our tools are often referred to simply as Mauns.

We’re renowned for our British made, high-quality, durable tools that are suitable for professional use, last through the years and deliver results.

Benefits of Round And Flat Jaws Parallel Plier for Jewellery Making

Our Round And Flat Jaws Parallel Plier provide jewellers with the power to bend and manipulate soft and fragile materials. It’s a great tool for securely gripping precious metals. This plier is 140 mm in length, small enough to fit comfortably in hand.

Maun currently manufactures three types of round and flat jaws parallel pliers:

•   Maun 4772 Round And Flat Jaws Parallel Plier Return Spring. In size 140 mm.
•   Maun 4730 Round And Flat Jaws Parallel Plier without Return Spring. In size 140 mm.
•   Maun 4773 Round And Flat Nylon Jaws Parallel Plier Return Spring. In size 140 mm.

These tools come with their own unique benefits and uses.

Piers road-tested a pair, and here’s what he had to say about our Round And Flat Jaws Parallel Plier Return Spring 140 mm.

Watch Piers Review Video

If you don’t have time to watch the whole video, we have highlighted Piers’ key messages as he road tests the 4772-140, a 140 mm round and flat jaws parallel plier with a return spring. He speaks on the benefits of the tool, and how it can best be used.

Round And Flat Jaws Parallel Plier 4772-140. Yeah really good. I like these, I like these a lot."

Piers talks about the traditional round nose pliers and reasons why they may prove a problem in the jeweller making industry.

"I know you can get different ones these days, but the most traditional pair of round pliers are round on each side. You can get round and flats, but most people generally have rounds and rounds. The negative with these, when you hold the metal, you put a divot into it. Mainly I use these for making jump rings, and jump rings use round wire, so where there's contact on the outside, these put a divot into the round of the wire, which is rather annoying."

Piers describes how the Maun Round And Flat Jaws Parallel Plier creates minimal marking when holding materials.

“Having a flat on one side does alleviate that a little, it doesn’t put a divot in. It may leave a flat, but a flat is much easier to make round.”

The larger base on the round is a great advantage.

“I like that these go a bit bigger towards the base. The round on these is handy for making bigger jump rings or collets."

The spring-return is a great feature for jewellery making, especially when bending metals.

“The thing I really like about these is that they are sprung. When making jump rings, you don’t bend it all round in one go. You start at the end, bend it round, release and then bend round again. Bend the tip, release, bend it round, release and so on until you get a round. You can see that that surface hasn’t been damaged."

The heavy duty feel of the plier gives confidence when working with heavier-duty wire.

"They are more heavy duty than the traditional round pliers. I think it’s the width of the handles, you can get a really good grip on them, so you can bend heavy duty wire at ease."

A disadvantage of the traditional round jaws plier is that the jaws tend to cross over with consistent use.

"I also think when you have two round jaws, they can twist a bit when you are really putting force on them. The two round noses start to bend opposite ways due to the force your putting on. That doesn’t happen with these [Maun pliers]. They are just really easy to use to be honest."

Piers explains how he would alter the pliers for his benefit.

"My one thing, you could rough up the surface a bit, but with any rough surface, the rougher the surface of the plier, the rougher mark you will leave on the metal. I have found where this doesn’t dig in so much on the back side when I'm using really heavy gauge wire, it may slip a bit.

The fineness of the round at the top, I would like it to go further and be finer. It just allows you to make much finer little jump rings that could be useful for a whole manner of things. A positive criticism, that would be the only thing I have to say."

Piers explains that he loves using this plier, especially with the spring, making his day-to-day work much easier.

"I love the spring. It saves you from having to flick it out with your fingers. Good addition, seal of approval!
